What you will learn

If you are going darker than the natural base with a permanent colour, such as Majirel we need to follow the darkening rule to ensure the colour does not fade too quickly. This is called ‘the darkening rule’.

Darkening Rule Majirel:

Use 1/4 corresponding basic + ¾ desired shade + 20 volume oxydant

Going darker than the natural base by up to 3 levels or more, increase the base:

Use ½ corresponding basic + ½ Desired shade + 20 volume oxydant

Inoa the rules are slightly different:

use ½ Corresponding basic + ½ Desired shade for any levels darker + 20 volume oxidant

It is important to note that this is not pre-colouring to go darker which is used when the hair is previously lightened and going significantly darker.
